Abstract:
The continued deployment of large satellite constellations has driven a rapid increase in the resident space object (RSO) population in low Earth orbit, making reliable tracking and collision avoidance increasingly critical operational concerns. As the RSO population grows, so does the risk of collisions and the onset of a cascading Kessler syndrome, making accurate RSO cataloging indispensable. Today, space surveillance is conducted primarily using ground-based optical and radar sensors, whose performance is constrained by weather, daylight, and geographic location. To overcome these limitations and enhance surveillance capability, space-based surveillance systems (SBSS) are emerging as a valuable complement to ground-based assets. In this seminar, we present some of the early work on Space-Based Surveillance Systems (SBSS) currently being carried out at the NUS Satellite Technology and Research Centre.
